See Me Now

We’re calling on the Welsh government to fully roll out same-day open access mental health support across Wales in a way that works for everyone.

In Wales, the mental health system is under pressure. More people need support for their mental health, but not everyone is able to access the high-quality support they deserve. Mental health professionals are feeling the pressure too. They often feel unable to deliver the quality of care they want to give and are left feeling stressed and burnt-out.

We are on the path to changing what mental health care looks like in Wales. Both the last and current Welsh governments have committed to make Wales “The first nation to deliver same-day, open access mental health care” in the world. This new model would provide support on the day someone asks for help, without the need for a referral. It would give people early access to the right support that makes them feel fully seen as a unique person with unique experiences.

Now the Welsh government needs to build on its commitment and make sure that this new approach is fully funded and implemented, and works for everyone.

Our local Minds have worked like this for years. They open their doors each day, never quite knowing who will walk through, but ready to provide support and look for solutions. In places where this approach has already been tested, mental health has improved and waiting times have fallen.

The Welsh government now needs to deliver on this promise. We’re calling on the Welsh government to:

  1. Ensure that the open access model is fully funded and implemented.

  1. Recognise the work that charities and the voluntary sector are already doing to deliver this model. They are vital to this change being a success.

  1. Prioritise tackling inequalities with this new system. Nobody should face challenges getting the mental health care that's right for them because of their background.
