What is Mind recommending?
The UK government has an opportunity to turn the tide on the next generation’s mental health. We need a strong, clear offer of support to transform young people’s lives.
The UK government has already said they want to improve early intervention to prevent young people reaching crisis point. In their election manifesto, Labour committed to deliver open access, drop-in Young Futures hubs in every local community. They have also committed to expanding Mental Health Support Teams in schools to 100% coverage by 2029. We are pleased the UK government has made these pledges, but now these need to be put into action in the right way. And there is more that the UK government needs to do.
Mind urges the UK government to:
- Make sure there is a Young Futures hub in every local authority area, so no young people miss out because of where they live
- Make sure there is a plan and increased investment to set these hubs up, and ensure they are designed to suit the needs of young people
- Make sure there is a plan to reduce wait times for young people’s mental health services and invest in specialist mental health services
